Kharal · Kundi sota · Khalva yantra

A mixer chops. Stone crushes.

That is why the chutney tastes different. A blade cuts and heats; stone bruises the spice and lets the oils out. Hand-carved hard stone that does not chip into your food, made to order by artisan families in the villages of Bihar.

Step one

What actually changes

Not nostalgia. A difference in how the two machines break the ingredient.

A mixer grinder

Steel blades cut at speed and warm what they cut. Fine, even powder. The aroma goes into the air and into the jar lid, and the texture is the same all the way through.

A stone kharal

Weight and friction crush rather than slice. No heat. The oils stay in the paste, and you stop whenever the texture is right - coarse for chutney, fine for masala.

Every shape we carve

Handcrafted from pure natural stone by artisans of Bihar. Available in Granite, Tamda, Hansraj and Mangecha stone types across Boat, Capsule, Kundi, Hexagonal and Octagonal shapes in sizes from 6 to 24 inches. Used in Rasashastra labs, Ayurveda colleges and kitchens across India.

Before you buy

The four things people ask us

Will it chip into my food?

No. Soft stone sheds into what you grind; Granite, Tamda and Hansraj are naturally occurring hard stone that does not chip. The pestle is cut from the same block as the bowl, so the two wear together.

Does it need seasoning?

Once, before first use. Grind raw rice until the flour runs white, three or four times. We send the four steps in the box and on the product page.

Will it arrive broken?

It is heavy stone, so we pack for it. If it arrives damaged we replace it - send an unboxing video within 48 hours.

Will mine look like the photo?

Close, not identical. Every piece is carved by hand from natural stone, so colour and flecking vary slightly. That variation is the point.

Who makes it

We do not buy stone and relabel it

We work directly with artisan families in the villages of Bihar, where the stone is quarried and carved. Most sellers buy finished pieces from traders. That is why we can carve a size that is not in any catalogue, and why the person who made yours is not a factory.
