Round Stone Mortar and Pestle in Black Granite

This round stone mortar and pestle is cut from solid black granite and finished smooth, made for Indian kitchens that still grind chutney, masala and herbs by hand. The round bowl is deep enough for pounding and the wide base stays put on the counter while you work. Known at home as a kharal, khalbatta or kutne wala, it is equally suited to daily cooking and to Ayurvedic bhavana work. Available from 5 inch up to 14 inch big size.

Why you will love it

  • Mortar and pestle are both carved from the same black granite, so the grinding surfaces wear evenly.
  • Heavy natural stone, from 2.5 kg in the 5 inch to 30 kg in the 14 inch, so the base does not slide while you pound.
  • Deep round bowl, 3 inch to 7.5 inch depending on size, keeps whole spices and wet masala inside instead of flying out.
  • Pestle length runs 6 inch to 12 inch, giving a comfortable grip and real striking force.
  • Hand grinding crushes cells slowly and keeps the texture and aroma that an electric mixer flattens.
  • One piece of stone with no joints, glue or coating, built to last for years of daily use.

How to use it

Add a small quantity at a time. Pound first to break the material, then switch to a circular rub against the wall of the bowl to finish the paste. It works for dry spice grinding, garlic and ginger paste, green chutney, guacamole, and for Ayurvedic preparations where a khalva yantra is used for churna and bhavana. For wet chutney, choose a size with enough depth so the mixture does not spill.

First-time seasoning, required before first use

This piece is not pre-seasoned. Season it once before you grind food in it.

  • Step 1: Rinse and dry the mortar and pestle with clean water. Do not use soap.
  • Step 2: Grind a paste of raw rice until the mortar turns grey. Discard it and repeat 2 to 3 times.
  • Step 3: Grind garlic, cumin and water to a paste. This removes the stone smell.
  • Step 4: Rinse with water only. The mortar and pestle is now ready to use.

Care

Wash with plain water only. No soap or detergent, since stone holds the smell. Scrub stubbish residue with a brush or a pinch of rice, then air dry fully before storing.

Handcrafted in Bihar

Each pathar ka khalbatta is shaped and finished by hand by artisan families in villages of Bihar, India, using the same methods used for the old sil batta and okhli. Because this is natural stone, colour and grain vary slightly from piece to piece, so the one you receive will not be identical to the photograph.
